What are parabens?
Parabens can be found in shampoos, moisturisers, shaving gels, cleansing gels, and other toiletries, their primary job is preservation. They are a highly controversial chemical and there have been many studies that show these parabens contain estrogen and can increase the chances of developing cancer, especially breast cancer. Also many other studies have shown a link to skin irritations. Nevertheless, the European Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP) stated in 2006 that the available data on parabens do not enable a decisive response to these questions.
What are sulphates?
Both Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and its relative Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) are commonly used in many soaps, shampoos, detergents and other products that we expect to "foam up". The main side effects of these are eye irritation, skin irritation, swelling of the hands, face and arms. So why are dangerous chemicals like these used? Simple – they're cheap. These chemicals found in many products are exactly the same as the ones you would find in a garage, where it is used to degrease car engines.
